Recently, the FBI arrested a man suspected of stealing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency from the government. The suspect, John Daghita, is the son of the CEO of Command Services & Support, an IT firm contracted by the US Marshals. He is suspected of stealing more than $46 million.

CMDSS’s Role in Cryptocurrency Management

Command Services & Support (CMDSS) is a Virginia-based IT firm with extensive ties to government operations. It holds contracts with multiple branches of the US government, including the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, and the US Marshals Service. The company came into possession of government-held cryptocurrency after signing a contract with the USMS to manage digital assets seized during investigations.

The Invesigation

Surprisingly, this matter first came to light not after a government investigation, but after a popular blockchain analyst known as ZachXBT first revealed his discovery of movements worth $23 million from wallets belonging to the US Marshals Service. ZachXBT also managed to uncover that the wallets belonged to John after discovering that he had unknowingly exposed himself in a previous dispute with another cybercriminal in a recorded private Telegram chat.

It was also uncovered through blockchain analysis that these funds came into the government’s possession during a seizure related to the Bitfinex hack in 2024. After being exposed, Daghita reacted by sending small amounts of the stolen funds to ZachXBT’s public crypto addresses. This is a form of attack designed to contaminate the wallets and attract regulatory attention, although it did not play out very well. Note that most of the stolen funds were Ethereum, with one wallet containing 12,540 ETH.

The Arrest

John Daghita was arrested on the island of Saint Martin. The arrest was the result of a collaborative effort between the FBI and French authorities. During the raid, an undisclosed but fairly large amount of $100 bills was seized and later shown in photographs. Multiple hard drives, storage devices, and digital wallet keys were also seized. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest on X, thanking both the FBI and the French authorities

Conclusion

As shown by ZachXBT, Daghita appeared to be very unprofessional when it came to operational security, not to mention his decision-making. Despite already not choosing his target very wisely, John proceeded to make mistake after mistake, bragging about his wealth on Telegram and targeting ZachXBT after being exposed instead of remaining quiet. His actions suggested that he felt invincible, which ultimately resulted in an international sting operation against him. John Daghita will now be prosecuted in the United States.
